Stem Cells: The Brain's Beginnings (60 min.)

Video Clip #1 (7 min.): Learn what steps are involved in developing therapies with embryonic stem cells, and what hurdles must be overcome to do so.

Video Clip #2 (7 min.): Learn how it is possible to use stem cells to test drug therapies, and what are the advantages of somatic cell nuclear transfer.

Overview
What is a stem cell? What could studying these cells tell us about the mechanisms of normal development? How could stem cells be used to treat disease? What is controversial about embryonic stem cell research and why? These are some of the questions addressed by the video and supplemental materials. A basic understanding of cell biology and genetics will help you gain a full appreciation of stem cell research.

Why This Science Matters

Recent milestones in Stem Cell Legislation and Policy

 2001

August 9 - President George W. Bush prohibits the use of federal funds for research on embryonic stem cell lines created after that date.

 2004

June 25 - New Jersey creates the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey and becomes the first state to fund stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research. (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5252449)

November 2 - voters in California passed proposition 71, the "Stem Cell Research and Cures Act," which provides $3 billion over 10 years for embryonic stem cell research and makes it a constitutional right to conduct stem cell research in California.

 2005

June - Connecticut creates the Connecticut Stem Cell Research Grants-in-Aid Program which will provide $100 million in funding for stem cell research over the next 10 years.

July 13 - Gov. Rod Blagojevich signs an executive order giving the Illinois Regenerative Medicine Institute $10 million to fund stem cell research for the first year.

 2006

April 6 - Gov. Robert Ehrlich signs the Maryland Stem Cell Research Act, which will provide $15 million in embryonic stem-cell research grants for the year 2007.

 2007

April - New York passes a state budget allocating $600 million for stem cell funding over the next 11 years.

 2009

March 9 - President Barack Obama revokes Bush's federal policy, removing limitations on federal funding for stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research. This new executive order will expand NIH support for human embryonic stem cell research.
