Mesa wide interaction in the stem cell field results in promising advances in Alzheimer’s research

January 17, 2016

The human brain is most complex object in the known universe. And what causes this seat of consciousness to slowly and irreversibly deteriorate from Alzheimer's disease is one of medical science's greatest mysteries. We still don't know how to stop Alzheimer's or reverse the neurodegeneration it causes, although some promising experimental treatments now being tested in people. Other potential therapies are just now emerging from research.

Rady Children's Hospital Awarded $250,000 Research Grant

September 8, 2015

Rady Children's Hospital has been awarded a grant that will help in the research and development of pediatric cancer treatments. The $250,000 grant was given Tuesday. "Funding like this is essential because it allows collaborative work to take place in a space where we don't usually work together. So the pediatric and adult cancer doctors get to work together, not just in medicine, but in science," said Dr. Catriona Jamieson, Associate Director of Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center, and the Program Director of the CIRM Alpha Clinic. The Sanford Center works to accelerate scientifically well-founded stem cell clinical trials that can bring new therapies for currently intractable diseases and traumas.

Killing Blood Cancer: CLL

Killing Blood Cancer: CLL

April 14, 2015

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, where blood cells are made. Researchers at UC San Diego are developing a new drug to treat CLL. The drug, cirmutuzumab, is an antibody designed to attach to a protein on the surface of CLL cells. Researchers hope that this process will block cancerous cell growth and survival. Right now, cirmtuzumab is being tested for its safety and effectiveness in humans in a Phase One clinical trial.

Stem Cells for Paralysis: First of Its Kind Study

Stem Cells for Paralysis: First of Its Kind Study

April 3, 2015

Researchers at UC San Diego are challenging the idea that spinal cord injury is irreversible. The first in-human clinical trials are underway to see if stem cells can treat the injuries. Joseph Ciacci, M.D., Neurosurgeon and Professor of Surgery at UC San Diego, talks about using neural stem cells to help paralysis patients in this KSAT 12 news feature.
