Welcome to the Sanford Stem Cell Institute (SSCI), where some of the nation’s top minds battle cancer andlessi other degenerative diseases here on Earth and 250 miles above it — at the brisk speed of 17,400 mph.
We are seeking to put cancer and other life altering and threatening medical conditions — like type 1 diabetes, chronic heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, and spinal cord injury — through their paces. Our objective: to eliminate them entirely.
SSCI is a global leader in regenerative medicine and a hub for stem cell science and innovation in space. The institute aims to catalyze critical research discoveries, translational advances, and clinical progress, and to develop and deliver novel treatments to patients.
SSCI houses six centers, each with unique yet interconnected missions.
Sanford Stem Cell Integrated Orbital Research (ISSCOR) Center
The Integrated Space Stem Cell Orbital Research (ISSCOR) Center, a cutting-edge laboratory aboard the International Space Station. The center is run by Director Alysson Muotri, PhD, and Deputy Director Catriona Jamieson, MD, PhD.
Sanford Stem Cell Discovery Center
The Sanford Stem Cell Discovery Center, a translational research engine that supports the discovery of treatments for a wide range of diseases and disorders. The center is run by Director Sylvia Evans, PhD, and Deputy Director Rob Signer, PhD.
Sanford Stem Cell Innovation Center
The Sanford Stem Cell Innovation Center, an accelerator of industry growth that supports the commercialization of technologies through collaboration with industry partners. The center is run by Director Gene Yeo, PhD, MBA, and Deputy Director Alexis Komor, PhD.
Sanford Stem Cell Fitness and Space Medicine Center
The Sanford Stem Cell Fitness and Space Medicine Center, a developer of technologies that measure stem cell fitness in space, in a bid to increase stem cell fitness and longevity on Earth. The center is run by Director Tatiana Kisseleva, MD, PhD, and Deputy Director Ludmil Alexandrov, PhD.
Sanford Advanced Therapy Center
The Sanford Advanced Therapy Center, a provider of leading-edge services for the development of innovative therapy products entering clinical trials. The center is run by Directors Dan Kaufman, MD, PhD, and Karen Christman, PhD.
